The traditional "village" that once supported families, has sadly, for many, become a thing of the past. In the modern world it’s far less common to stay in the area or even country we grew up in.
There are adventures and opportunities to be had! Which is amazing, but it does mean that when we start our families, we are then not surrounded by extended family support networks that were crucial and present in past generations.
Close-knit communities or even just neighbours lending a hand are also far and few between in 2025. The impact of this loss of a village is profound to new parents and it can have a huge effect on their mental health.
All you really want as a new parent navigating the postpartum period is support. Whether that be in the form of a nutritious meal being dropped to your door, your house being cleaned, advice and support on feeding, someone to care for the baby while you rest, a well-deserved massage or a counsellor to process your birth experience/this huge new chapter in your life.
Everyone will need support but until you get there you might not know exactly which type of support you will need. You might not know where to find that type of support or you might be so sleep deprived that the effort to research and find support feels too much. Add on to this the cost of these types of services and you see clearly the reason why new parents will just struggle through.
After welcoming our son into the world we experienced just this and once I came out of the newborn fog it got me thinking. I had been asked so often during my pregnancy by friends, family, work colleagues what they could buy for our baby, which was so incredibly generous, but often I would have no clue what to tell them! When you don’t know what you need this then leads to you receiving a lot of baby blankets and many baby clothes, some of which I’m ashamed to say we never used. It felt like such a waste.
What if we could have used the money people had wanted to give us for something that would have made our lives so much easier during those early days and months? What if we could have had the option to browse these services all in one place? On a trusted platform that has already researched and vetted the businesses for us. And so the idea for Build your Village was born.
